►We bought two of these to replace two HP PSC 1610's three wks ago - so far so good. The PSC's worked for us for 3-4 yrs and by now they both sounded too tired and ready to die.
Ink cartridges: Buy the "XL" versions, stands for extra large I guess. Better price per page and less trips to the store.

Installation: A breeze. For the ones who had problems: FOLLOW THE EXACT DIRECTIONS, not what YOU think is the right way :-) BTW, if I thought the installation of the PSC 1610 was long...this one is REALLY long. Was it an hour? Or it seems it was.

The HP F4280 is a lot quieter than the PSC 1610 and reasonably fast. Except at the printing start: For some reason after you hit "Print" it takes 3-5 seconds of "Nothing is Happening". Can this silly problem be corrected?? I ended up with some duplicate documents, but now I know better.
Save ink and time: Set your default at "Fast Draft" - it makes a very respectable copy at that setting.

Scanning: I think it is a little faster than the PSC 1610 and at the default setting of 200dpi the results are very good. I tried the 600dpi, slight difference on the monitor, but I'm sure it makes a better printed copy.

OVERALL: A great printer for the price.

►I've only had this for about 2 weeks but so far I love it.
I cannot say how durable or reliable it will be but here's what I can say:
1) it worked great right out of the box and was not difficult to hook up
2) it prints much faster than my Canon Pixma
3) the scanning software is easier to use than my Canon Pixma
4) it has a fax which - again - worked the first time, very easy
5) it SEEMS to use less ink than the Canon or the Epson I had before that (you do have to buy 4 ink cartridges not just one, but you can buy only the one you need, you don't have to buy all at once)
6) You can turn it off and when you call for it by clicking PRINT on a document or photo, it turns itself on - very nice! (and it comes on quickly)

This may or may not be a downside: the manual is very thick and there are lots of options. I haven't even felt like going through them all and I figure I may never do so unless I need something to work a certain way that does not, as it is, out of the box. I did have to set a few things on the menu, like turning off the ringer of the fax, but that was easy.

My ONE complaint is that the scan screen is smaller than the pixma, so if you have a document or picture larger than about 11x14 (not sure the exact size - see the specs) then it won't work for you. The Pixma had a larger screen.

All in all, if this thing gives me 2 years of good service I will be satisfied.

So far, I would give it a hearty recommendation.

►If you're looking for a printer with all the latest technologies, check out the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless. Keep in mind that HP makes two 6500 models--one is wireless and one is not. This is the wireless model. With copy, scan, print and fax functions this all-in-one is a real workhorse.

Fast speed (up to 31 ppm) and extremely easy to use. The setup function is all done via software--you don't even need to touch the 6500's keypad controls. It links directly to your System Preferences control panel making the wireless and fax settings easy. It uses 4 separate color inks, so you can control your print costs when only a single color needs to be replaced.

Main drawback is HP's decision to only include a 2-line text display. For a printer in this price range, HP should have included a 2.5" color LCD screen. If you're looking for a multifunction machine that does it all, seriously consider the HP 6500 Wireless.

►I purchased this printer at Costco and I am very pleased with it so far. Wireless setup was simple and worked perfectly for all three of my PCs on my wireless network running XP and Vista. The print quality is excellent as is the speed. Double sided printing is also very nice to have. I could not be more pleased so far.

►Pros: Acceptable printing speed. Good and fast draft prints and copies. Quiet operation. Text quality is nearly laser sharp. Very good photo quality. Duplex printing and copying. Software that works well, unlike HP.

Cons: Can NOT produce proper COPY of documents with margins less than 0.25 inches. Borderless copy doesn't help. Can't print from USB keys. Poorly designed USB slot barely fits average USB key. No document preview on copy and scan on the LCD like HP has.

Summary: Let me start with the bad. I've been bugging Canon support for the past several days because I discovered a big flaw in the COPY feature of the printer. MX860 is utterly incapable of producing a copy of the document that has side margins less than 0.25 inches. If you have an 8.5x11 document with small margins that you want to copy, too bad you'll have to scan to PC first and then reprint, otherwise your margins will be partially cut off. I've tried everything Fit To Page which should be designed just for cases like this, borderless copy, size reduction. I can reduce the doc to 25% original size and still the margin adjacent to the initial horizontal edge of the flatbed scanner will be messed up. I do not believe this is a defect of my particular printer and the tech support didn't say that either. I've sent them scanned samples of my copies to show them that no method can be used to make such a copy successfully. It has been very frustrating and just today my wife asked me to make a copy of some document the credit card company sent her and I couldn't do it on MX860. I am actually comparing MX860 to HP Photosmart C7280. Canon kills the HP in text quality and sharpness as well as better photo quality especially on Standard quality setting. But when it comes to making copies of such documents, HP easily achieves the desired result using Fit To Page. Canon, what were you thinking?

In addition, try placing a 4x6 photo starting in the corner where the arrow on the flatbed marks the starting position. You will end up with a copy of the photo that is missing 0.25inches on one of its sides. You will have to move the photo away from the scanner edge to get a proper copy.

Needless to say I am very annoyed with this AIO at this point. If you are not bothered by such an issue, this is a very good all around AIO with some very useful extra features. Scanning straight to PDF is very good one and so is duplex copying (unless you have a doc with those margins). Very good quality printing.

But for it's flaw the machine is getting 3 stars from me. If that copy wasn't an issue it would have been 4 or maybe even 4.5.

BTW tech support said they will forward my comments to the customer feedback program. There is nothing they can do just as I thought. Unless enough people complain it maybe a while before this is fixed, if ever.
